Music to Bounce to
My newest story, “Bounce,” is a first in many respects. It’s the first time I’ve participated in an erotica anthology. It’s the first time I’ve published something NOT in the Danny Diamond series (though hopefully not the last). It’s my first published story told in first person. It’s also the first time I’ve written something set in the modern-day.
I had a lot of fun writing this story. I love the challenge of subverting the classic tropes while keeping true enough to the tale to make it seem familiar. And the opportunity for allegory, wordplay, and Easter eggs was almost boundless. I couldn’t include everything, even though I wanted to. I won’t ruin it for you, but I’d love to hear which ones you can pick out.
If you follow me on Twitter, you know that I’m a metalhead. One might think 1940s Noir and metal wouldn’t be able to cohabitate in one brain, but you’d be wrong. However, even I know my musical predilections don’t fit too well with my preferred genre and setting. But with this new title, set in a Miami strip club, well those two things go together much better, don’t they?
That being the case, I couldn’t resist putting together a soundtrack for the story. A couple of the tunes are actually mentioned in the text, albeit vaguely (copyright law being what it is). Others just fit the mood of the scenes I had in my head. There’s a song for each scene in the story, but the length of each one doesn’t exactly fit the scene that it’s assigned to. Oh well. Can’t have everything.
See below for a full track listing as well as the public Spotify playlist where you can listen to the tunes—maybe even while you read the story. For those without a Spotify account, I also put together a YouTube playlist with the same tunes.
Hope you enjoy!
